@Dimitrios: It is a shell. Look in my portfolio for June 8, 2007 and you will see the photo of a living sand dollar. It is covered in fine hairs and can move in the sand. What we find on the beach, like all seashells, are dead ones.
Your image makes this lowly sand dollar appear elegant, with an almost jewel-like quality.
